An AI pendant's most important specification is what survives without its service.

Humane's shutdown, Bee's privacy architecture and Omi's open stack reveal three very different questions hidden behind a small piece of hardware.

A physical object can lose its main job

Humane's consumer FAQ set February 28,2025 for Ai Pin's disconnection from its servers and retirement of its online account service. It said cloud-dependent functions such as voice interaction and AI responses would no longer work, while limited offline functions such as battery status could remain.

That historical example gives wearable shoppers a concrete way to interpret service dependence. The frame, battery and microphone can still exist while the useful product experience disappears. It does not predict the same outcome for another manufacturer. It does show why a purchase needs more than a materials list. Ask which functions live locally, which require an account and what the provider has promised about export, support and a possible end of service.

A privacy architecture is part of the product

Amazon's explanation of Bee Private Compute says audio is transcribed in real time and then discarded, with transcripts and derived information protected using device-controlled keys. It describes isolated server processing and verification of the approved software environment before data is shared. Those are the company's architectural claims, not an independent security audit conducted by SmartWearGuide.

The interesting distinction is between stored audio and stored meaning. Discarding a recording does not mean no personal information exists: a transcript, summary or extracted commitment can remain highly revealing. A useful buying comparison should state what is retained, where it is processed and what control the owner has. A one-word privacy badge cannot explain that chain. The architecture has to be understandable enough to answer an ordinary question about a private conversation.

Open source changes the options, not the amount of work

Omi's documentation describes an open-source stack spanning hardware, firmware, app and backend, with a self-hosting option. That gives technical owners a different kind of route to control or extend the system. It does not make a consumer purchase automatically independent of every cloud service, nor does it remove the work involved in running one.

Our interpretation is that openness can make a fallback more inspectable. Someone may be able to evaluate the code, replace an integration or host a backend they control. They still need to maintain it and verify that the required transcription and other components can function in the chosen arrangement. An open repository is an opportunity. A tested, documented recovery route is a stronger promise for an owner who simply wants their device to keep doing its job.

A transcript and an action have different stakes

A meeting summary is useful even if it needs editing. An assistant that sends a message, changes a calendar or completes a transaction acts on the world. Our recommendation is to compare those stages separately when judging an AI wearable: capture, interpretation, proposed action and confirmed action.

The most comfortable hardware will not compensate for a confusing boundary between them. Can you inspect the original context? Is a proposed action clearly identified? Can you correct the interpretation before it is used elsewhere? These are design questions for a demonstration, rather than allegations about a particular device. A wearable that stays out of the way physically should still make consequential behaviour visible. Otherwise, its apparent convenience can come from hiding the step at which the owner needed a clear choice.

The exit test is a practical buying test

Before committing to a service-based wearable, try exporting a small amount of non-sensitive test information. Check what format you receive and whether it is useful elsewhere. Review the account deletion controls and what the product says will happen to backups or connected services. Avoid collecting other people's private conversations merely to investigate a gadget.

Our suggested test also includes an ordinary connection failure. Ask the manufacturer which functions continue when the phone has no network and how pending data is handled. We do not assume all devices solve that problem in the same way. A clear explanation of limits can be more reassuring than a broad promise of always-on intelligence. It lets the owner plan around an interruption rather than discover the dependency at the worst moment.

The market is selling continuity as well as intelligence

The three source sets point to different aspects of the category: a past shutdown exposes dependence, a privacy architecture tries to limit access, and an open stack offers technical paths to control. None by itself guarantees a successful daily product.

We see long-term ownership as an increasingly important comparison axis. The best choice is a device whose information, service terms and fallback behaviour match how the buyer intends to use it. A cheap microphone connected to an opaque service can become a costly habit. A more transparent system may still be inconvenient to maintain. The useful question is whether the complete arrangement deserves a continuing place in your life. Its small physical size should make that question easier to answer, not hide how much infrastructure and trust sit behind it.
